Filmmaker and actor Tigmanshu Dhulia, known for his critically acclaimed movies like Paan Singh Tomar, has recently been outspoken about a few core issues facing the Hindi film industry. His comments cover everything from high ticket prices to the current nature of creative relationships in Bollywood.
One of Dhulia’s most firm stances is that the biggest problem for Hindi cinema right now is not poor content, but the cost of going to the movies. He believes that multiplexes and the "exhibition sector" have made ticket prices so expensive that they have effectively "kicked the real audience out of the theatres."
Dhulia argues that the audience who used to regularly watch films in single-screen theaters the actual common movie-goer can no longer afford to take their family to an expensive multiplex. He points out that films that did well with lower ticket prices, like those on 'National Cinema Day' or even some re-released older films, prove that affordability is the main factor stopping people from going to the cinema.
He suggests that the focus on high-priced refreshments and premium seating is driven by greed and is hurting the industry's connection with the masses.
In another recent interview, Dhulia opened up about the personal challenges of working in Bollywood. He called the industry an "insecure place" where it is very difficult to trust people.
He explained that everyone in the industry feels vulnerable at times, but if they show any weakness or open up to an acquaintance, that person might take advantage of it.
Dhulia spoke candidly about struggling to find a real friend in the industry—someone he could talk to honestly about work issues, creative decisions, or just personal bad phases. He concluded that he has a "problem" because he "cannot open myself up to anybody."
Finally, the director spoke about a creative limitation he now feels. Dhulia shared a heartfelt comment on how the passing of his friend and frequent collaborator, the late actor Irrfan Khan, has changed his writing process.
He admitted that when Irrfan was around, he could "spread his wings further" and write intricate, complex scenes and characters, knowing that Irrfan would be able to perform them perfectly. Now, without an actor of that caliber, he feels restricted. Dhulia clarified that it isn't writer's block, but rather a need to simplify his scenes because he doubts whether current actors would be able to do justice to truly complex material.
