Thudarum, after its release on 25th April, has received a positive response from audiences and critics.
Thudarum is a Malayalam film. Malayalam cinema is known for its authentic storytelling, and Thudarum doesn't disappoint.
Directed by Tharun Moorthy, it features great actors like Mohanlal and Shobana leading the cast.
If talking about film, Thudarum follows Shanmugham (Mohanlal), a man whose simple quest to retrieve his seized car spirals into a much deeper exploration of love, loss, and resilience.
Moorthy has beautifully captured the small details, as from the start the story is gripping and is inclusive of everyday humor in the beginning and then dives into heavier, more urgent emotions. This transition is handled smoothly, allowing viewers to become fully invested in Shanmugham’s journey.
Mohanlal gives a performance that makes people remember why he is such a giant in Indian cinema. Drawing on his old-fashioned emotional intensity and wry humor, he brings Shanmugham to life and makes him real and interesting. Shobana's elegance enriches the film, and although she is on screen for relatively little time compared to Mohanlal, her character lingers.
One of the film’s greatest strengths lies in its emotional authenticity. Unlike many modern films that often prioritize spectacle, Thudarum builds its tension organically. Small, quiet moments are given space to breathe, allowing the audience to feel the characters’ struggles on a deeper level. However, the movie does slightly falter towards the climax, where the narrative leans into a somewhat conventional revenge plot. While still engaging, it loses a bit of the uniqueness that made the earlier portions so compelling.
Visually, the movie is breathtaking, with K.R. Sunil's script offering a firm foundation for the visuals to excel. The pacing is deliberate, prioritizing the story over action, although some might find that the latter parts can be tightened.
Thudarum excels in its sincere storytelling, gorgeous performances, and adherence to the Malayalam film traditions. It is a poignant reminder of how simplicity, if handled sincerely, can bring forth powerful film moments.
It is playing in cinemas now!
