Former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer Sameer Wankhede is once again in the news regarding his legal battle over a popular web series. The core of the issue is a defamation suit he filed in the Delhi High Court against the makers of the Netflix series The Ba**ds of Bollywood often seen as a reference to the 2021 drug-on-cruise case he handled, involving Aryan Khan.
Wankhede, who belongs to the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), claims the series—which was directed by Aryan Khan and produced by his parents, Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment—has unfairly damaged his reputation.
Wankhede Claimed he argues that the show features a character who looks very much like him, and this character is shown in a way that suggests he is corrupt and unethical. Wankhede has stated that this negative portrayal not only maligns him personally but also erodes public confidence in law enforcement and anti-drug agencies.
The Delhi High Court recently took note of Wankhede’s plea and has issued summons to Red Chillies Entertainment, Netflix, and others involved. This means the court has formally asked them to appear and provide their responses to the defamation suit.
The former NCB officer is seeking a court order to stop the streaming and distribution of the alleged defamatory content. He is also asking for ₹2 crore in damages, which he says he would donate to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital for the treatment of cancer patients.
Wankhede recently addressed the controversy over these chats being 'leaked' to the media. He firmly denied that he had leaked them, explaining that they were simply part of the evidence he was required to present in the Bombay High Court as part of a different legal matter—specifically, the CBI's extortion case filed against him.
The CBI Case: Following the cruise case, a different case was filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Wankhede himself. The CBI accused him of allegedly attempting to extort ₹25 crore from Shah Rukh Khan to protect his son, a charge which Wankhede has denied and is currently facing in court.
Wankhede has stated in court that since the web series was released, he, his wife, and his sister have been subjected to increased trolling and online humiliation. He emphasized that this is not about "satire" but "humiliation" of officers who serve the nation. The court has listed the matter for further hearing later this month, asking the defendants to provide their side of the story soon.
