Filmmaker Rohan Sippy, known for movies like Bluffmaster! and recently making a significant mark in the streaming space with successful shows like Criminal Justice and Duranga, has a nuanced and largely positive view on the rise of OTT (Over-The-Top) platforms. He sees the digital medium not as a replacement for traditional cinema, but as a complementary, character-driven space that has profoundly reshaped the entertainment ecosystem.
The Advantage of Character and Opportunity
For Sippy, one of the most compelling aspects of the OTT landscape is its focus on character. Unlike the big screen, which often relies on glamour and star power, streaming content thrives on intricate character arcs and nuance. He believes the longer format of a series allows for greater depth, pulling the audience into the characters' world as they get to know and relate to them over multiple episodes.
This focus on layered storytelling has opened up a significant opportunity for actors who might otherwise have been typecast or reduced to supporting roles in big-budget theatrical films. Sippy has noted that talented actors who may not be considered traditional "A-listers" for the big screen like Pankaj Tripathi, Manoj Bajpayee, Kay Kay Menon, and Konkona Sen Sharma are now leading critically acclaimed shows. The streaming world provides a broader canvas where their talent can truly shine.
While Sippy acknowledges the "magic" of showing a film on the big screen with a live audience, he maintains that the medium is ultimately secondary. For him, the most important factors in choosing a project are the story they are telling and the people he gets to collaborate with. He believes a filmmaker must react to the exciting opportunities presented, regardless of whether it's for a theatrical release or a streaming series.
Sippy also points out the immense reach of OTT platforms. He suggests that a popular web series can achieve a reach equal to or even greater than a successful theatrical film, reaching hundreds of millions of subscribers instantly. This massive audience potential makes the digital space incredibly appealing.
Transitional Phase and Audience Expectations
Sippy views the industry as being in a transitional phase. He believes that the types of content audiences seek in a theatre versus at home are evolving. Today, many dramas have found a natural home on OTT, making it harder for a simple drama feature film to make an impact in the theatrical space unless it offers a unique, must-see movie-watching experience.
This experience, he suggests, must involve more than just strong action or musical elements; it needs to be an engaging and immersive event to draw audiences out of their homes.
He has also shared his thoughts on content genres, noting that while crime and thrillers are currently very popular on streaming, he feels that comedy is under-represented in Indian original OTT content. To know such latest updates, stay tuned to serialboosters.com Thank you!
