The casting news surrounding Karan Johar’s long-gestating sequel, 'Dostana 2', has sent ripples through the industry, confirming that rising star Pratibha Ranta is set to take on the female lead role. This highly publicised move sees Ranta reportedly replace Janhvi Kapoor, an original member of the cast.
The decision is being celebrated by many as a powerful symbol of Bollywood’s gradual pivot towards prioritizing raw, proven acting talent over established lineage, proving that an impactful performance can open doors to the industry’s biggest banners.
The shift in the film's lineup highlights the pressure on big production houses like Dharma to deliver critically and commercially successful content, often leading them to look beyond the immediate circle of industry children and embrace talent that resonates authentically with a nationwide audience.
The journey of 'Dostana 2'.has been anything but smooth. First announced in 2019, the romantic comedy was originally slated to star Kartik Aaryan, Lakshya, and Janhvi Kapoor. However, the project was unexpectedly shelved after a brief shooting schedule, following Kartik Aaryan's much-discussed exit. This put the Dharma Productions film in an indefinite state of limbo for several years.
Recently, producer Karan Johar committed to reviving the sequel, but with a complete creative and casting overhaul. The film's script has been reportedly reworked to fit the new narrative direction. While newcomer Lakshya has been retained from the initial cast, the project has now welcomed one of the country's most respected actors, National Award winner Vikrant Massey, who steps into the spot previously held by Aaryan. Massey’s confirmation, along with his promise of a more glamorous, "Dharma-style" avatar, built anticipation for the female lead announcement.
The subsequent departure of Janhvi Kapoor from the project attributed to scheduling clashes and other professional commitments accumulated during the long production delay created the opening that Pratibha Ranta has reportedly now secured.
The casting of Pratibha Ranta alongside established performers like Vikrant Massey and the debuting Lakshya is a massive vote of confidence in the 24-year-old actress. Ranta, who initially began her journey in television, became a sensation after her performance in Kiran Rao's much-loved comedy-drama, 'Laapataa Ladies' (2024). Her portrayal of a young, determined village woman, marked by natural vulnerability and quick wit, earned her universal acclaim and several prestigious awards, including the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year.
For a film like Dostana 2, which aims to be a blend of high-fashion glamour and contemporary humour, Ranta's addition is particularly exciting. It suggests a move away from casting based purely on perceived commercial appeal and towards a genuine focus on screen presence and chemistry. While Janhvi Kapoor, with her established fan base and fashionable image, would have brought instant star power, Ranta brings the immediate credibility of a highly successful debut performance.
Her choice for this role is significant as it sends a strong message: talent, regardless of whether it comes from a non-industry background, is now a powerful currency capable of securing lead roles in the biggest Bollywood production houses. As the new trio Massey, Ranta, and Lakshya prepares to take the stage, expectations are high for them to deliver a refreshing, energetic, and engaging cinematic experience.
