Indian comedian and actor Kapil Sharma’s newly opened Kap’s Cafe in Surrey, Canada, is in the news with a recent firing. On Wednesday night around 1:50 a.m., reportedly, 8-10 shots were fired at the cafe, and according to the initial investigation, the intention behind the attack was unclear. The incident caused visible damage to the building’s glass windows and interiors. Fortunately, while staff were inside during the attack, no one was hurt.

Who’s Behind It?

Shortly after the attack, Khalistani extremist Harjeet Singh Laddi, who is wanted by Indian authorities for terror-related activities, claimed responsibility on social media. He alleged that the act was a reaction to a past joke made by Kapil Sharma about Nihang Sikhs, a group known for their traditional warrior identity. Laddi, who has been accused in multiple violent incidents, including the killing of a Hindu leader in Punjab, is reportedly based abroad and has a history of online threats.

Kapil Sharma’s Team Responds

The team at Kap’s Cafe took to Instagram and addressed this; they shared the news on their Instagram handle, condemning the incident and expressing relief that no one was hurt. This was posted on The Kap's Cafe official account; the store read, “We are still processing this shock. It’s heartbreaking, but we are thankful that no one was harmed. We opened this space to spread love and joy, and we stand by those values even now.” The post also expressed gratitude to the local police and community members for their support, adding that the team would continue to stand against violence.

What's Next?

Surrey police are currently reviewing CCTV footage and gathering evidence to track down the culprits. Meanwhile, Indian officials are expected to raise the issue with Canadian authorities, given the involvement of a wanted Khalistani figure. The cafe was launched just a week prior by the comedian and his wife, Ginni Chatrath, and the couple will be hoping that the place is up and running as quickly as possible. While Kapil already has been involved in his popular show, which is on Netflix, and his upcoming films, they are hopeful for the cafe to bounce back.
