Veteran writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar is well-known for being an outspoken public figure, which often makes him a target for online trolling. However, instead of ignoring the negativity, Akhtar has consistently chosen to hit back with sharp and direct responses, defending his views and his family's patriotic history.
Akhtar’s friends and family often advise him to stay away from the negativity on social media, suggesting he is "above all these things." While he admits he sometimes feels the same way, he believes there are times when he must challenge the trolls directly.
He has stated that people who make communal or hateful remarks need to be shown that they "can't take this liberty" and that if they persist, he will "pay you back in the same coins." For Akhtar, responding is a way of setting a boundary and not allowing a climate of unchecked abuse to exist online.
Akhtar’s replies are notable for their strong language and for turning the criticism back on the troll by questioning their own character or history.
When trolls attempt to question his Indian identity or suggest he celebrate Pakistan's Independence Day, Akhtar has responded powerfully by invoking his own family's role in India's freedom struggle. In one viral instance, he told a troll to "know your place," stating that while the troll's ancestors may have been "licking the boots of the British," his own ancestors were "dying in Kala Pani for the country's freedom."
Akhtar has been fierce in his criticism of users who make "vile" or "lowly" remarks, particularly those with a communal or hateful slant. He has used strong words to condemn such behavior, emphasizing that true patriotism or decency is something trolls "wouldn't know."
He has also slammed trolls who resorted to personal attacks, such as attempting to fat-shame a cricketer or suggesting absurd, misogynistic actions. In these cases, Akhtar has not hesitated to call out the user’s low character and "low IQ."
Akhtar has observed that he receives abuse from extremists on both sides of the ideological spectrum—some calling him a 'Kaafir' (infidel) and others a 'Jihadi.' He once famously said that if he had to choose between going to "hell or to Pakistan," he would "rather like to go to hell," to mock those who tell him to leave the country. He noted that the constant abuse is a sign he is doing something right, joking that if the abuse ever stopped, he would assume he must have "made a mistake."
The video Javed Akhtar's SAVAGE reply to trolls under his tweet PRAISING Virat Kohli post-India-Pakistan match provides an example of Javed Akhtar's sharp way of dealing with online trolls who tried to inject communal remarks into a post praising a cricketer.
