Actor Gulshan Devaiah has spoken openly about the topics of nepotism in the film industry and the often-staged interactions with paparazzi, offering a perspective that is both nuanced and critical of Bollywood's internal workings.
Devaiah's views on nepotism move beyond just the simple definition of star kids getting opportunities. He has argued that nepotism is a type of privilege, but he broadens the definition of privilege to include many advantages, not just being born into a film family. For example, he has mentioned his own privileges, such as having a good education and family support that allowed him to pursue acting without worrying about their financial security.
He believes that children of film families have the privilege of access and knowledge they understand how the industry operates, its business models, and its networking from an early age. However, Devaiah points out that this advantage is not a guarantee of success.
He observes that many actors from privileged backgrounds still fail if the audience doesn't accept them. Conversely, he cites huge successes like Shah Rukh Khan, an outsider who became one of the world's biggest stars, as proof that the industry is not entirely closed off.
A key part of his argument is that film production is a private business, not a government job based purely on objective merit. Producers, he suggests, are free to cast whoever they think will guarantee a return on investment, which often includes capitalizing on the public interest in star kids.
He has also observed what he calls an "observation" that Hindi film audiences often watch dubbed films of South Indian star kids without the same "nepotism ki khujli" (itch/anxiety) they have when Bollywood launches a star kid. He suggests that this debate around nepotism is sometimes amplified by a few people with an agenda to settle personal scores within the industry, distracting from other issues like favouritism.
In fact, he once called the nepotism argument "stupid," suggesting that favouritism or a veto power held by established stars over who their co-actors will be is a bigger underlying issue, having personally lost out on roles due to such practices.
In a separate, more light-hearted but still pointed critique, Gulshan Devaiah has publicly poked fun at the "down-to-earth act" that some Bollywood celebrities put on for the paparazzi.
In one instance that went viral, when photographers asked him to pose, he began to mimic a common interaction, mockingly asking the paparazzi: "Khana khaa liya aapne? Yahi poochte hain na? Kaise ho aap log?"
This was widely interpreted by fans as him roasting or making fun of fellow actors, especially nepo kids, who are frequently filmed having these seemingly polite, scripted interactions with the paparazzi, which many believe are staged or performed for public consumption to project a humble image.
Devaiah's imitation was seen as a way of exposing the artificial nature of these public interactions, implying that the 'caring' questions are part of a routine rather than genuine concern. The fan reactions often praised his quick wit and honesty for "cooking the entire Bollywood fraternity" with his sarcasm.
Gulshan Devaiah's commentary on these two subjects offers an insider's view that acknowledges the privilege within the industry but tries to place it in a broader context of business, subjective art, and other internal power dynamics, all while retaining a sense of humor about the industry's often performative public image.
