The 70th Filmfare Awards was a star-studded, unforgettable evening celebrating the best of Hindi cinema from the year before, held in Ahmedabad. The night was full of big wins, dazzling performances, and emotional moments that cemented new records and honored living legends.
The biggest story of the night was the record-tying haul by director Kiran Rao's film, Laapataa Ladies. This heartwarming and insightful movie about two brides who get swapped on a train journey was the undisputed winner, clinching a massive 13 awards, which equaled the record previously set by Gully Boy.
The film took home the biggest awards, with Laapataa Ladies winning Best Film and Kiran Rao winning Best Director. The film was also recognized for its excellent performances, with Ravi Kishan winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male) and Chhaya Kadam winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female), while newcomer Nitanshi Goel won the Best Debut (Female) award.
Furthermore, the movie's music was a huge hit, as Ram Sampath won Best Music Album and Best Background Score, and Arijit Singh won Best Playback Singer (Male) for the lovely song "Sajni." It also won technical accolades in categories like Best Screenplay, Best Dialogue, and Best Costume.
The night saw some of the industry's biggest names walk away with the coveted Black Lady statue for their lead roles. In a rare and exciting moment, the Best Actor award was shared between two deserving stars: Abhishek Bachchan for his compelling performance in the film I Want To Talk and Kartik Aaryan for his powerful role in Chandu Champion. The award for Best Actress went to Alia Bhatt for her intense performance in the film Jigra.
While Laapataa Ladies and the top actors took the main prizes, the Critics' section highlighted other powerful films and performances. Shoojit Sircar's hard-hitting film I Want To Talk was honored with the Critics' Award for Best Film. For the critics' acting wins, Rajkummar Rao won the Critics' Award for Best Actor (Male) for Srikanth, and Pratibha Ranta won the Critics' Award for Best Actress (Female) for her fantastic work in Laapataa Ladies.
The future of cinema shone bright with Best Debut Actor awards going to Nitanshi Goel (Laapataa Ladies) and Lakshya (Kill). Debut Director awards were also shared by Kunal Kemmu (Madgaon Express) and Aditya Suhas Jambhale (Article 370).
No Filmfare night is complete without special honors and dazzling entertainment. The night paid a heartfelt tribute to veterans, honoring legendary actress Zeenat Aman with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The late iconic filmmaker Shyam Benegal was also posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The entire evening was kept lively by the hosts, the charismatic trio of Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, and Maniesh Paul.
