Actor Emraan Hashmi has proactively addressed the public concern and online criticism surrounding the trailer of his upcoming film, 'Haq', emphasizing that the legal drama is not intended to "malign" or pass judgment on the Muslim community. Hashmi, who is a Muslim himself, has been very vocal about the film's intent, insisting that its message is balanced and ultimately "pro-women".
The film, which co-stars Yami Gautam, is a fictionalized drama inspired by the landmark 1985 Shah Bano Begum case. This historic Supreme Court ruling was a pivotal moment in Indian legal history, igniting nationwide debates over women's rights, maintenance for divorced women, and the complex relationship between personal religious law and secular constitutional law.
The plot centers on a Muslim woman's fight for justice and dignity after being divorced, a struggle that embodies the conflict between individual rights and community customs.
Emraan Hashmi reportedly plays a character whose actions or viewpoint contribute to the legal battle, adding layers of complexity to the narrative.
Following the initial mixed reactions to the trailer, which included some social media users alleging a negative portrayal of the community, Hashmi offered a detailed clarification. He explained that his approach to the script was unique, requiring him to consider the story not just as an actor, but also with a "sensitivity regarding a community, regarding my community."
'Haq' is "very balanced" and that the filmmakers are "not pointing a finger at a community or passing a judgment." The actor went on to assert his personal conviction, stating, "As a liberal Muslim, I can say that I had no problems with the viewpoint of the film. Because we are not maligning any community, if we were, I wouldn't have done this film."
To further reinforce his secular perspective and the film's broader appeal, Hashmi highlighted his own inclusive family life. He mentioned that he married Parveen Shahani, who is Hindu, and that their son engages in both 'puja' Hindu prayer and 'namaaz' Muslim prayer, reflecting a "secular upbringing." By sharing this personal detail, he sought to assure the audience that he has approached the sensitive subject matter with a deeply rooted, non-judgmental, and liberal perspective.
Hashmi ultimately urged all communities to watch the film, describing it as a "story of a woman's voice," "equality," and "a certain right to dignity," which has a message for men and women across all walks of life. The film is slated for a theatrical release on November 7. To know such latest updates, stay tuned to serialboosters.com Thank you!
