In a recent conversation, actress Chitrangda Singh addressed a persistent issue in the film industry: the intense pressure actors, especially women, face to maintain a youthful appearance.
Singh offered a candid, practical take on the situation, acknowledging that the demand for youthfulness is an inherent part of the business. She pointed out that film is a "visual medium" above all else, meaning that looks are a central component of casting and success.
As she explained, if an actor wants to be considered for a younger role, they must be able to physically pull it off. This reality, she suggests, makes the focus on age and appearance a justified concern for filmmakers and producers.
The actress was quick to clarify that this pressure isn't limited to just female stars. While there is often more flexibility in the roles written for male actors as they age, Chitrangda believes the need to look fit and youthful exists for everyone. She highlighted male actors' dedication to health and fitness to stay relevant.
However, she noted that the scrutiny women face is particularly unforgiving. She mentioned global stars like Nicole Kidman and Demi Moore as examples of celebrities who are actively working to preserve their youthful looks, suggesting that this is a worldwide phenomenon in the entertainment industry.
Chitrangda Singh also used the opportunity to speak out against the harsh judgment and trolling that actors receive when they choose to undergo cosmetic enhancements. She strongly defended the right of any individual, especially those in the public eye, to make personal choices about their appearance.
According to her, if someone in a visual medium decides to enhance themselves to feel more confident or to suit a role, it is "absolutely fine." She criticized the way people often "assassinate somebody's whole character" over such private decisions, stressing that while constructive criticism is welcome, hurtful trolling is unnecessary and damaging to mental health.
In essence, Chitrangda Singh's comments shine a light on the tough reality of the film world: that while talent is crucial, actors are also selling a "believable story," which requires them to face the ongoing pressure to defy the visible signs of aging.
