Director Ayan Mukerji has reportedly chosen to step down from the much-anticipated action film 'Dhoom 4' to dedicate his full attention to his passion project, the 'Brahmastra' film series. This move, which marks a significant shift in his professional focus, is understood to have been an amicable decision reached after discussions with the film's producer, Yash Raj Films (YRF) head Aditya Chopra, and actor Ranbir Kapoor.
The main reason cited for Ayan Mukerji's departure from the 'Dhoom' franchise is creative differences. Mukerji is a filmmaker who prefers to have substantial creative input, especially in the writing process, to fully bring his vision to life on screen.
The script for 'Dhoom 4' was reportedly already penned by writer Shridhar Raghavan before Mukerji's official involvement. Sources suggest that this structure meant Mukerji would be largely responsible for executing a pre-written screenplay, leaving him with limited say over the core story and character development.
Mukerji, known for films that blend spectacle with strong emotional narratives, romance, and drama—such as Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani—reportedly felt that the straight-up action-thriller format of the 'Dhoom' series, and projects like it, didn't align perfectly with his personal filmmaking philosophy. He didn't want to simply execute a ready-made project.
Despite stepping away from such a major franchise, the separation from YRF and actor Ranbir Kapoor (who was reportedly slated to star) was a respectful one. Both Chopra and Kapoor reportedly understood and supported Mukerji's desire for greater creative freedom and his decision to prioritize his self-created universe.
With his commitments to 'Dhoom 4' now concluded, Mukerji has re-focused entirely on the next chapters of his fantasy epic, the 'Brahmastra' trilogy, also known as the 'Astraverse.'
'Brahmastra: Part Two – Dev': This sequel, which will explore the story of the powerful character 'Dev,' is now the director's central focus. Mukerji views this series as his true passion project, offering the necessary wide scope for original storytelling, drama, and spectacular visuals that he seeks in his work.
He is reportedly utilizing this time to fully complete the writing work for 'Brahmastra 2,' adding the final touches to the script while enjoying some time away.
Despite the setback of Mukerji's exit, Yash Raj Films is determined to move forward with 'Dhoom 4'. The studio is now expected to search for a new director, potentially appointing an in-house director to helm the project.
With a new director coming onboard, YRF may also potentially re-evaluate the casting for the film, including the lead actor, though no official announcement has been made regarding changes to the cast yet. The 'Dhoom' franchise remains a major asset for the studio, and they will likely look for a director who can execute the existing script while adhering to the franchise's successful style.
