Acclaimed filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, who later gained prominence for critically celebrated films like Mulk and Article 15, recently opened up about one of the biggest setbacks of his career: the underperformance of the 2011 Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, 'Ra.One.' His candid remarks reveal the deep emotional impact the film's reception had on him and offer a rare look at the vulnerability behind a massive Bollywood project.
The Film That "Broke Me Emotionally"
'Ra.One' was one of the most ambitious and expensive Indian films of its time, featuring cutting-edge VFX and starring one of the world's biggest actors, Shah Rukh Khan. Despite the scale and the hype, the film received mixed to negative reviews upon release and was widely considered a commercial disappointment by industry standards.
Anubhav Sinha shared that the failure of the film was a profoundly painful experience. He admitted that having made a film with Shah Rukh Khan that was declared a flop by many broke him emotionally. "That film broke me emotionally. It took time for me to recover from that," he confessed. This statement highlights how the disappointment from a high-stakes project can take a significant toll on a creator’s spirit. The sheer magnitude of the failure, especially after working with a superstar, was what made the setback so severe.
Sinha admitted that a key issue was his own inexperience with a project of such enormous size. He felt he "lost control" while making the film, acknowledging that he was overwhelmed by the scale, the international crew, and the ambition of the vision. He pointed to flaws in the final product itself, noting that the script and editing could have been better, even though he still believed in the film's core concept, music, and special effects.
Beyond the technical difficulties, Sinha also revealed a sense of unspoken hostility surrounding the project. He believed that there were people within the industry who actively wished for Shah Rukh Khan and the film to fail. This sentiment added to the already immense pressure and the feeling of isolation after the film's release, recalling a period where people even stopped answering his phone calls in the wake of the failure.
Cherishing the Bond with Shah Rukh Khan
Despite the film's critical reception, Sinha’s admiration for Shah Rukh Khan remains absolute. He expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to work with him, describing Khan as more than just an actor or a star. Sinha emphasized Khan’s generosity, passion, and compassionate nature throughout the stressful production.
Sinha shared that even though they haven't collaborated since, the personal bond and the lessons learned from observing Shah Rukh Khan's personality were invaluable. "I value him more than a star and an actor," he noted, stressing the superstar's grounded nature and ability to inspire.
While a future project remains a possibility, Sinha acknowledged that he currently lacks a suitable story for the actor, and their respective busy schedules make a reunion difficult for the time being.
In recent years, Anubhav Sinha has reinvented himself with powerful, socio-political dramas, suggesting that the lessons and emotional recovery from the Ra.One experience ultimately fueled his successful second innings as a filmmaker.
