Ammy Virk's Stance on Clean Cinema and the Removal of Potentially Objectionable Words
Popular singer and actor Ammy Virk has recently drawn attention to his principled approach toward filmmaking, particularly his focus on clean comedy and family-friendly content.
Virk revealed that he takes personal steps to ensure his films are suitable for all audiences, going so far as to consciously remove words that could be considered crude or inappropriate, even one as common in colloquial language as 'saala'.
Virk’s primary motivation for maintaining a strict line against vulgarity or double-meaning humour comes from his role as a father. He has openly expressed the desire for his daughter to be able to watch his body of work without any reservations or difficult questions about the content. In an industry where the boundary between clean comedy and potentially offensive "dark humour" is increasingly blurred, Virk believes it is crucial to maintain a specific line. He stated that he couldn't face the thought of his child questioning him about the nature of such content in his own films.
Illustrating his commitment, the actor shared that he actively works to eliminate even seemingly harmless, yet often crudely used, words like 'saala' from the dialogue. While the word literally translates to 'brother-in-law,' it is frequently employed in a derogatory or curse-like context across Hindi and Punjabi cinema. Virk emphasizes that the intent behind the words matters most. He noted that while he may have used it unintentionally early in his career, he now ensures that such words are removed "wherever possible."
He asserted that, across his many films in both the Punjabi ('Pollywood') and Hindi ('Bollywood') industries, he has ensured that none contain double-meaning jokes. This level of self-censorship is a deliberate effort to create content with a wholesome and pure intent.
Virk's commitment to clean comedy also comes with a defense of the genre itself. He has pushed back against the notion that comic roles, often associated with Punjabi actors in Hindi cinema, are an inferior form of acting. He considers comedy a significant art form that deserves respect, highlighting the difficulty of making people laugh in today's content-saturated world. By making a conscious effort to keep his humour clean, he is simultaneously striving to elevate the genre and ensure that his contributions to comedy are lasting and respectable.
This choice to maintain a high ethical standard in his work reflects a larger dedication to creating cinema that families can enjoy together, reinforcing his image as a thoughtful and responsible public figure in the entertainment industry.
